Romans 13:11–14 (NLT) This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. 13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
Preceding the Great Awakening in the 1730’s a call for moral reformation was given
Prior to the American Revolution the nation had found itself in moral decline, not only this nation but the nations as a whole. Britain itself which was the predominant influence on the colonies were also was in descent.
The Reformation of the 16th Century had long lost its spiritual zeal and now had settled into the doctrinal positions of those that led it, primarily Martin Luther and John Calvin.
Religion had become what people did, not what defined them. Most people attended some type of religious ceremony but very few lived with deep conviction of its obligation.
Gods Remnant– Romans 11:5 (KJV) Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
They are those who are unwilling to settle in to the status quo. Those willing to look for the more. Those who are determined to live a separated life.
The 1700’s proved Gods determination as well. God Raising Ordinary People to Extraordinary Things-
To expect Revival one had to experience despair– Kidd
The Great Awakening Was:
Passionate Preaching of Salvation and Judgment
Igniting of Emotional Worship
Call for Repentance concerning the moral failure. (Look at crime and culture away from church at this time)
Hunger created a seeking, finding brought an awakening that launched a movement.
Awakening connects to a time when religion dominates mans heart and complacency rules his actions and worldliness controls his desires.
The Framework of Our Awakening–
Awake to Sin- Romans 6:11–13 (NLT) So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. 12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
Sin in is not a Light things- 1 Kings 16:31 (KJV) And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.
Consequence- Ephesians 5:1–7 (NLT) Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. 3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. 4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. 5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. 7 Don’t participate in the things these people do.
Awake to Prayer- 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT) Never stop praying.
Prayer Creates- Mark 11:22–24 (NLT) Then Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. 23 I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. 24 I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.
Prayer Moves- Matt 17:21 (KJV) Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Accountability: Wake Up Call– Pastor Ricky Parker
Awake to Worship- John 4:23-24 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
God Dwells Where Worship Is- Ps 22:3 (KJV) But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
Worship out of Experience- Psalm 40:3 (NLT) He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.
Awake to Eternal Reality- Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Heaven- Matthew 25:31–34 (NLT) “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.
Hell- Matthew 25:41 (NLT) “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.
People would cry out from such conviction of sin as if they were about to die- 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NLT) The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
Are you a Fan or Follower- Ephesians 5:14–16 (KJV) Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
